Scents alive

I can’t quite put my finger on it. Today, as I walked by the construction site next door to my office building, there was a new smell. There have been lots of funky smells over there since construction began last year, but this one reminded me of … something. What? What is that?!

Art class in grade school strangely comes to mind, although I still can’t place the scent. Art wasn’t really my best event back then (or today, for that matter, hence the reason I leave the artistic stuff to my sister) and I haven’t been in such an environment for years, unless you count my short failure stint in a ceramics class last summer. So basically it’s pretty odd that there’s any smell that I would associate with art classes. Hmmmm ….

Hey! Maybe it’s paste. Could they be constructing the new dorm using rubber cement to hold it all together? Do you suppose they still apply it with that little brush, or is there something bigger for a job of this scope? Or is it that goopy gluey stuff used for making papier mâchè?

And on an unrelated but fascinating note, did you know that papier mâchè means, literally, chewed paper? Yecch. I knew I hated art class.

Ooooh! I'm suddenly consumed with a desire to make papier mache somethings! I don't know what, but....Something! Ha.

Don't worry. The urge will pass, to the betterment of all mankind.

Truly funny. Maybe the dorm is a three dimensional collage, held together by that pasty gloopy stuff.

I loved art class. What I hated about it was the same thing I hate about many classes: sharing my work. I did not want to pull what was in my head out and recreate in any given medium.
