Tinkles, Congrats, and Sundries

Again with the squatters who sprinkle when they tinkle. Today, the Local Toilet-Seat Sprinkler not only left her spray on the seat, but she also failed to flush. And judging from the lack of any paper in the unflushed bowl, it appears she did not feel the need to wipe either herself OR the seat.

I don't think I need to say any more about that. (Today.)

Happy Anniversary to the two people who should know that I'm talking to them. I love you both, and wish you many, many more happy occasions together.

I just couldn't watch the State of the Onion last night, although I listened to part of it. Anybody watch or listen and feel anything other than gratitude and/or relief that it's his last one?

I deal with many imperious parents and entitled students in my job. (I also deal with many fantastic students and parents.) The worst of these are the children of potential major donors to the school. The parents, as demanding as they can sometimes be, have arguably learned to expect people to fall all over themselves to please them. (One might even posit that they have earned the right to expect red-carpet treatment, although some among us would differ.) The children of these folks, however, should be reminded that they are (1) privileged to have wealthy and, perhaps, generous parents, and are (b) also privileged to be attending a fine institution of higher education. None of this entitles them to be imperious or, well, entitled. When they take on that domineering tone as though they, themselves, pay the tuition bill or might, one day, donate amounts of money containing large quantities of zeros, I want to stab them in between their fingers and pull their eyelids over their heads until it hurts.

Today I found myself exclaiming about how warm it is outside and what a beautiful day it is. Reality check: It's 44 degrees (F) today and I was gallivanting around without a coat at lunchtime. Yes, I am a native New Englander.

Best line from a student this week:
"You can see what I'm dealing with." Spoken with a virtual roll of the eyes after her overbearing mother left the room, by a first-year student who is reluctantly taking the rest of the semester off to go home for necessary medical treatment, and who is (like most teens and, let's face it, the rest of us too) justifiably annoyed by everything her mother does.

That's it for now. Have a great night!

The next JFK?

I haven't yet decided who to vote for in the upcoming primary, but I think Caroline Kennedy's Op-Ed in today's NY Times about her decision to endorse Barack Obama gives me some (more) things to think about.

Persepolis and Marjane Satrapi

I was planning to write all about Persepolis, the fantastic film I saw last week with the ex-blogger most recently known as Educand. But then I got online this morning and saw this fascinating interview with the author/cartoonist/writer of the film and the comics on which it is based, and the following quote just blew me away:

Nothing strikes [cartoonist Marjane Satrapi] as more stupid than fanaticism. "A Muslim fanatic and a Christian fanatic, a Jewish fanatic, a secular fanatic, an atheist fanatic, a communist fanatic - all of them are the same. The thinking that if you don't think like me, that if you are not with me, then you are against me, this is something to condemn." She extends the parallels to "the bearded guy of my country [Iran] and George Bush. . . . One says, 'Read the Koran,' the other says, 'Read the Bible.' One is fighting the axis of evil, the other one is fighting the big Satan. God is their best friend, God is with them. . . . They use different words, but the idea remains the same."

Her insights are ... well, you be the judge. Please, read the full interview, and then see the film. It is truly excellent in every way: visually, historically, politically, humorously, sadly, sweetly, powerfully. I'm going to go see it again, probably tomorrow, because it was just that good. You should know I haven't seen a movie more than once in the theater in years. I used to do it fairly frequently, but it's been ages since I saw anything that I thought warranted a second look on the big screen. Persepolis is it, and the subject/author/artist behind it is someone I know I'm going to be watching and listening to.

Congratulations, Ms. Satrapi, on your very much deserved Oscar nomination, and thank you for sharing your story and your art. I hope all the wee children won't be too heartbroken when you pluck the golden statuette from the paws of Ratatouille and the flippers of Surf's Up on Oscar night. (Assuming there will be an Oscar night this year.) Bon chance!

Nice bric-a-brac you've got there

The word "scamper" has long been a favorite of mine, and if you ask me, it doesn't get used nearly enough. Today I decided that "ruckus" is another good word.

In other news, if this isn't the cutest pup you've seen today (aside from your own, of course), then you might want to hold a mirror under your nostrils to check whether you're breathing.

Go away

Yes, yes, it's a new year and everyone's happy. Also, I am alive, thank you for asking. Just a few little thoughts to hold you over until I feel like adding a real post:

Why can't the snow plows operating on state and DCR roadways have overhead brusher-thingies™ installed to clear off road signs that are obscured by snow?

Isn't this purty?

BayStateRdJan15.jpg

That was Bay State Road in Back Bay/Kenmore yesterday morning on my way to work.

A propos of none of your beeswax, I need to go back to a chiropractor.

Work sucks lately.

I get very sad if my kitty doesn't sleep on my bed all night. Typically if she's not there when I go to sleep, she's there when I wake up (and might contribute to same), but I prefer it if she's there when I'm falling asleep AND when I wake up. I remember that it took many months after Zelda died before I stopped feeling her phantom weight on the covers at the foot of my bed. I miss the actual weight of a loved one near me in bed, and you can take that however you choose.

I was diagnosed with adult ADD a few months ago. I take Rit@lin now, which I think is kind of hilarious since I am so far from being hyperactive that I'm more likely to be taken for catatonic.

Yesterday I bought bags of Her5hey Kisses and Miniatures for 82 cents each. So what if the wrappers were all red and green? My office looks festive and I have a full candy bowl again.

Why can't people in my organization spell my name correctly, even when they're responding to an e-mail from me in which my name, spelled correctly, is included at least twice, not including the return address field where it's printed yet a third time?

We just got some great new floor plants in the common areas of my office building. The best part is that a guy comes in every few days to water them. I could totally keep plants alive at home if only someone would pay to have them professionally maintained for me. Why isn't that offered on Amazon so I could add it to my Wish List? Maybe they could take care of litter boxes too ....

That's all I've got for now.
